Street Art Stencil Book @ Laurence King

Encore un livre de street art vous me direz ? OUI et c’est loin d’être le dernier ! C’est tant mieux ; c’est au public d’aiguiser son sens critique afin de faire le tri parmi le volume impressionnant de nouveautés sur ce terrain si tendance, tout comme c’est le cas au moment de la rentrée littéraire.
Aujourd’hui, nous nous penchons sur les éditions anglaises Laurence King qui ont publié il y a peu Le Street Art Stencil Book ON.Studio. Le concept est on ne peut plus original : vingt pochoiristes ont été invités à découper un nouveau pochoir afin qu’il soit représenté en découpe laser dans le livre comme matrice prête à être utilisée. Quand on sait quelle valeur les artistes du pochoir donnent à leurs matrices, le pochoir en tant qu’oeuvre originale, comme clé de voûte de toute création, on est tout simplement ravis de tant de générosité. Par ailleurs, leurs efforts ne s’arrêtent pas là puisque chacun d’entre eux a aussi peint dans la rue ce pochoir inédit, la photo de son application in situ accompagnant chaque participation.

Another book of street art ? YES and it is far from being the last one ! So much better it is for the public to sharpen their criticism in order to sift through the number of releases in this subject.
Today, we stare at the English publisher Laurence King who recently published The Street Art Stencil Book ON.Studio. The concept is original: Twenty stencil artists were invited to cut a new stencil so that it can appear in the book as a template ready for use. When you know what value the stencil artists give to their stencil, as an original work, as the cornerstone of any creation, we are absolutely delighted before so much generosity. Moreover, their efforts do not stop there since each of them has also painted their stencil on the street. The picture of the action in situ is an application to accompany each entry.

Lundi, c’est le Stencil Of The Week : Boxi

La planète compte aujourd’hui un certain nombre de festivals entièrement ou partiellement dédié au street art. La ville de Hamburg, en Allemagne, en compte un. On reviendra sur le Fame Festival, en Italie, dont l’édition 2010 va bientôt être inaugurée, ou encore Nuart en Norvège. Le Street Art Melting Pot (STAMP) est un festival dédié aux expressions artistiques dans la rue de la musique au cirque en passant par le théâtre de rue et le street art dans son acceptation contemporaine. Difficile de renier une certaine filiation entre les Os Gemeos et les Royal de Luxe par exemple.
C’est un artiste de Berlin que l’on a déjà croisé sur SHX qui s’est illustré au sein du STAMP : Boxi. (On retiendra également la fresque monumentale de ecb, hors catégorie pochoir). Et on salue donc le retour de cet artiste qui avait brillé par son absence cette année.

We can now notice many festivals worldwide dedicated entirely or partially in street art. The city of Hamburg, Germany, has its own. The Berlin based stencil artist who has already crossed over SHX distinguished himself in the STAMP: Boxi. (We will also retain the huge mural by ecb, out of stencil art). And we therefore welcome the return of this artist who was not so present during this past year.

Aiko @ Los Angeles

Aiko, qui a fait partie du collectif Faile, continue son bout de chemin de carrière solo aux Etats Unis. Son style naïf, enfantin et féminin se déploie cette fois dans un hôtel de Los Angeles, The Standard in Hollywood. C’et à l’occasion de son expo « Vivid Fiction » avec la japonaise géniale Junko Mizuno et Samuel Lowder à la Merry Karnowsky Gallery qu’elle a réalisé cette commande murale.

Aiko, who was part of the collective Faile, continues her long way solo career in the U.S. Her style is naive, childish and feminine and unfolds this time in a hotel in Los Angeles, The Standard in Hollywood. It was at the occasion of her exhibition « Vivid Fiction » featuring the great Japanese Junko Mizuno and Samuel Lowder at Merry Karnowsky Gallery she has done this mural commission.

C215 & Eelus @ Brooklynite Gallery

La Brooklynite Gallery continue sur sa lancée de duo shows. Après avoir fait se rencontrer dans le champ du pochoir M-City et Dolk, c’est au tour de l’artiste français C215 et de l’anglais Eelus de voir leur travail se confronter. On connaît moins le travail d’Eelus de ce côté de la Manche et de l’Atlantique. Cet artiste a fait ses premiers pas dans le pochoir il y a quelques années et s’est totalement investi à partir de 2006, on l’a ensuite aperçu lors du Cans Festival en 2008 à Londres. En février dernier il a eu sa première expo solo à Londres. Ses pochoirs le plus souvent en trois couleurs intriguent par leur thèmes liés à la science fiction, dans un univers assez sombre et atypique.
Le titre de cette expo, Paradise Lost, convient bien à ces artistes qui s’intéressent tous deux depuis longtemps au thème de l’innocence perdue.

The Brooklynite Gallery keep organizing some duo shows. After the encounter in the field of stencil art of M-City and Dolk, it is the turn of French artist C215 and London based Eelus to see their work to confront. Less known is the work of Eelus on this side of the Channel and Atlantic. This artist took his first steps in stencil art a few years ago and was fully invested in 2006, then we found him at the Cans Festival in London in 2008 (like C215). Last February he had his first solo show in London. His stencils’s topics usually in three colors are often related to science fiction in a universe quite dark and unusual.
The title of this exhibition, Paradise Lost, is well suited to these two artists who are interested in the theme of innocence lost long ago.

Sten & Lex’s Summer

L’actualité de l’été 2010 a été contre toute attente assez riche. Pendant que nombreux d’entre vous se prélassaient sur la plage, les pochoiristes travaillaient d’arrache pied. Cela a été le cas de C215 qui a marqué la capitale londonienne d’une exposition remarquable, d’Andrea Michaelsson qui a émerveillé le quartier de la Grazia de ses nouvelles créations, Leckomio et sa première exposition solo sur le continent américain, etc, etc. Autant de sujets sur lesquels je reviendrai car il vaut mieux tard que jamais.
Bref, aujourd’hui, nous pouvons revenir sur l’été de Sten & Lex qui sont restés au sein de leurs frontières.

Cela a commencé par une installation murale monumentale dans le Museo Caradente, le 
palazzo collicola, à Spoleto, suivie par une exposition personnelle à la Mondo Bizzarro Gallery à Rome. Ils y ont présenté une nouvelle série de douze portraits dans la lignée de ceux déjà montrés à Rome à la CO2 Gallery et à la Galerie Itinerrance à Paris les mois passés. Nous attendons maintenant avec impatience leur prochaine expo, duo cette fois, à la Brooklynite Gallery, à New York, aux côtés du jeune Gaïa.

The news of the summer 2010 was rich enough against all odds. As many of you were lounging on the beach, some stencil artists worked extremely hard. This was the case of C215, who hit London with an outstanding exhibition, Andrea Michaelsson who dazzled the area of Grazia’s new creations, Leckomio and his first solo exhibition in US etc., etc. So many subjects I will come back on later.
In short, today let’s see the Sten & Lex’s summer who remained within their borders.
It began with a huge mural installation in the Museo Caradente, in the
Palazzo Collicola, Spoleto, followed by a solo exhibition at the Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in Rome. They presented a new series of twelve portraits in line with those already shown in Rome at the CO2 Gallery and the Gallery Itinerrance in Paris a few months ago. We now look forward to their next show in Fall, duo, this time at the Brooklynite Gallery, New York, alongside the young Gaia.
